"Natural Gas Industry" magazine on "GTL and CTL conference technologies 2013"

"Natural Gas Industry" magazine in its June issue reported from CREON Energy International Conference «GTL and CTL Technology 2013", held in Moscow on March 27.

GTL (CTL) process is based on the initial conversion of hydrocarbons into the synthesis gas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen) and further Fischer-Tropsch synthesis – a highly exothermic catalytic process. Selectivity of the process, as well as the stability of the catalysts are highly dependent on the process temperature. Consequently, main reasons preventing rapid commercialization of GTL technologies include tough requirements to heat transfer and the overall process flowsheet. Fischer-Tropsch reaction results not in a single but in several hydrocarbon products which have complex molecular weight distribution: waxes, light synthetic oil fractions or synthetic oil. Production must become more focused and technology developers are working on the fourth-generation GTL- and CTL- technology. Key areas for development for the engineering solutions include: a radically simplified technology flowsheet that results in a single monoproduct, which can lead to a drastic reduction in capital investment thanks to the compact design, simple installation procedure plus efficient utilization of heat and material flows. In the long term, this should create additional industrial opportunities in many areas, including monetization of associated petroleum gas (APG), of stranded and remote as well as low-pressure gas fields. This would be implemented through production of synthetic oil and synthetic fuels, processing of gas into liquids on site, including on the offshore platforms , construction of GTL plants on floating vessels, unlocking reserves of heavy oil fields .

Representatives of the leading Russian vertically integrated oil companies took active participation in discussing the prospects for production and use of liquid synthetic fuels.
