German scientists learned to produce fuel from gas, coal and even wood sawdust a hundred years ago. After a while the technology was abandoned. The traditional method of production proved to be more profitable. Now the Russian chemists are reviving this overlooked old technology.
“Our plant plot plan is about eight times less. Therefore, it is less costly, easier to operate, and producing from gas a light synthetic product (mixture of transportation fuels) immediately in one pass.”
Associated gas is used as a feedstock. As a by-product of oil production, it is usually flared. According to various estimates, from 30 to 80 billion cubic meters are wasted. This technology will produce from 1000 cubic meters of methane 400 kilograms of liquid fuel with zero sulfur and separated from water. This is an additional profit and environmental improvement.
“Take a look at typical fossil oil. It is dark thick liquid. And this is Synthetic oil. As you can see, it is clear. A colorless fraction of light hydrocarbons, easily upgradable to transportation fuels with a minimum of interactions. "
The process was made cost-effective thanks to cobalt catalysts. Catalyst production is established in Troitsk (Russia). And there the original composition is mixed, molded, calcined, impregnated and sorted into fractions. That seemingly little detail makes it possible to equalize the cost of synthetic oil with its competitors.
“The uniqueness of these catalysts is that they contain components that have never been used before: thermo-expanded graphite and finely divided aluminum. The technology of dispersed aluminum metal introduction into a pellet is simply incredible. Unbelievable. "
It took some time for the scientists to enlist the support of industry. The most compact unit is worth tens of millions of dollars, and it takes years to implement. And yet the technology turned out to be greater than the current global level. If Petrochemical company today launches the associated gas processing into liquid fuel and delivers it to its own pipeline, the project pays for itself in 4-5 years. For the oil and gas industry this is a very good indicator.

Oil business is enormously profitable business. In pursuit of the black gold, companies often overlook the less profitable aspects. With this new technology, the situation can be changed. Then subsurface reserves will be enough for many more generations.
